Tattoo by Sylva Kanderal
The story of Tattoo begins in 1820, when a young Scotsman, William Smith, joins the U.S. Army in Boston. Ten years later, he witnesses a bloody conflict between farmers and Shawnee Indians. William is captured and sentenced to eternal life by the tribe chief. The curse is associated with a ritual tattoo on his back – a red poppy with the smoking skull.
Over the next two centuries, between the Industrial Revolution and the digital age, William’s life oscillates between waves of success, admiration, wealth, and recognition and feelings of deep disappointment, helplessness, loneliness, and painful personal loss. The curse of eternal youth, marked by a ritual tattoo, complicates his every relationship, isolating him and forcing him to lead a nomadic life. He moves from place to place, living in Oklahoma, Cleveland, New York, Morocco, Paris, Tahiti, and Rio de Janeiro. His life is a carousel of surprising events, each one a tribute to the curse’s impact on his life and relationships.
At the beginning of the 21st century, William lives in Miami and devotes himself to philanthropy and playing golf. At its core, his life remains empty until one unexpected encounter changes everything.
