About Heartbeat at My Feet by Phyllis H. Moore
The first of two Heartbeat books, this coming of age story follows Lily, a thirteen-year-old destined to begin the school year without her mother or brother. Family drama follows her as she struggles with an alcoholic mother and often rebellious brother. However, her faithful dog, Wanda, is there each time she needs unconditional love. The adults in her life, a concerned neighbor and deputy become the role models she will watch, but everyone has their own story and what seems to be a perfect life has evolved from hardships similar to Lily’s own. Loss and resilience define the characters as they navigate obstacles and demonstrate the strength gained by facing their hardships.
Supporting their humans in this story, are the subjects of Edith Wharton’s quote, “My little dog . . . the heartbeat at my feet.” Enjoying the comfort pets bring, is a privilege and Lily’s story demonstrates the lessons humans can learn from their animal companions–lessons sometimes painful and raw, but necessary. As Lily ages through this two book series, the companionship and support of pets for her and her friends is highlighted, even when the humans don’t seem to notice.
Follow Lily to young adulthood and watch as the world unfolds to her, her mother and brother, and friends. Although there are hardships, twists, and drama to overcome, in the end there is hope and resilience, and always a little magic in the human spirit when combined with the uncomplicated personalities of animals.
