Gunny Mac Private Detective Trouble in Chinatown by Steven Walker
No one writes like this anymore, but Walker does… As Raymond Chandler would say, “He talks like a man of his age talks – that is, with a crude wit, a lively sense of the grotesque, a disgust for a sham and a contempt for pettiness!”.
Walker’s story is based on true historical fact. In 1942 Roosevelt felt certain that Guadalcanal would fall to the Japanese. He instructed an Army general to collect and burn all the money in Hawaii and replace it with bills with Hawaii written across the back of each bill so the money would be useless to the Japanese.
Walker masterfully weaves a thrilling story about four wounded veterans, discharged because of their wounds suffered on Guadalcanal, become private detectives in Chinatown and get involved in thwarting anyone who is someone from stealing the money.
Gunny Mac, Navy Cross winner eighteen years a Marine and forced to become the one thing he hated, becoming a civilian.
Gunny Wojohowitz a Marine who came from the coal fields in Clymer, Pennsylvania and harder than woodpecker lips… Mac’s best friend.
Lt. Alan Burke, spoiled Harvard graduate and Naval officer sent to the Marine Corp for punishment as a naval gunfire forward observer seeks the one thing we all need…redemption!
Padre McCaffery the Jesuit priest assigned to the Marine Corps First Division, wins the Navy Cross and suffers a head wound…now he is different, but he shows the world how much he loves his God, his Marines, his bourbon and cigars.
Together they form a bond no one can never break… to fight one last battle for their friends, their country and their Corps.
