Featured Interview With Author Louise Dupont
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in rural Manitoba. I am currently living in Winnipeg, I worked for many years at the St. Boniface branch of the Winnipeg Public Library. I am currently retired and am volunteering on a regular basis. I also sing in a choir. I have always had a keen interest in spirituality and healing.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Since I was raised on a farm, I did not have the opportunity to go to a library or bookstore while growing up. However my mother would order me some books from a library. These books were then mailed out to us for a 3 week loan. I remember being very excited to be getting these books.
I started journal writing in my early twenties. After that I occasionally wrote some poetry and short
stories.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I enjoy historical fiction. I loved the books written by Diana Gabaldon. I also have read many spiritual and self-help books. Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra, Wayne Dyer and others have had a huge positive impact in my life.
I like finding pictures in magazines and writing short blurbs about the picture.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My book Hidden Treasures was written after my 21 year old son died by suicide. It is about my healing journey after his death. I felt strongly that I had to write this book. The inspiration for it came from seeing the picture of my son juggling with fire. One day as I was looking at the picture, it came to mind that a book would be written about this. This idea lay dormant for a while. About a year later as I was looking for my son's graduation pictures I happened to find a story written by my son when he was in grade 2. As I read his story I was taken aback by the symbolic messages found in it. In the story – titled, "Lost in the Storm", my son enters a labyrinth and gets lost in a storm. He then meets up with a ghost of light who guides him through the storm. At the end of the story he is happy (big smiling face). Being lost in the storm also symbolized so well what it is like to be depressed – always feeling lost and never being able to find a way out of it The labyrinth is also such a symbol of our life journey – always ending up in a dead end then trying again to find a way out.
I made a conscious effort to make the book as pleasing to the eye as possible by using the children's drawings throughout the book and using healing colors. I was very fortunate to have a book designer who understood what I was trying to convey and who did a wonderful job in presenting the drawings and photographs.
I hope readers will follow me on this healing journey.
