Featured Interview With Author Barbara Lipkin
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in raised in Chicago and still live in a Chicago suburb, with my husband. I just published my fifth volume of my Bella Sarver Mystery series: The Butterfly Carpet Murders. I retired from my nursing career a number of years ago, to devote myself to working as an artist, art teacher and writer. Not as rewarding financially, but a lot more fun!
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I've been reading all my life, and writing almost as long. I remember making up stories about my 'in-laws,' who lived in a secret compartment in my bedroom closet and got up to all sorts of adventures, when I was probably only 6 or 7 years old. I have quite a few unpublished novels, short stories & poems hiding away in my files, but I only started publishing in 2016, with my first Bella Sarver Mystery: Paining Lessons.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have so many favorite authors, it's impossible to list them all. But a few current ones are Donna Leon, Louise Penny, Alexander McCall Smith, Anthony Horowitz, Anna Quindlen, and of course, Agatha Christie. (Hmm. Just noticed how many of my authors' names begin with the letter 'A.' Is that significant?) My favorite genre is–obviously–mystery. I also love historical fiction. My non-fiction preferences are for history, art, politics.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
The Butterfly Carpet Murders: a Bella Sarver Mystery was inspired by a trip by husband and I took to Scotland about a year ago, just as the pandemic was winding down. As we were exploring some of the 'great houses,' I was struck by how historical events still impact Scotland today, and, my mind working as it does, I began to wonder what my favorite protagonist, Bella Sarver, would make of it all.
Bella is an artist who lives and works in a Chicago suburb. She knows a lot about art, painting, and people, and it's amazing how often her artistic insights lead her to discover how the latest murder victim to have crossed her path came by his or her demise. Her husband, Art Halperin, who she met during her first adventure, Painting Lessons, would prefer that she not get involved with these things, but she just can't help it.
It takes me about a year or so to write each book. Even though I write fiction, I do quite a bit of research into the book's setting, characters, history, and so forth. I can usually get the basic story down in a couple of months, but revising and editing take a lot of time. Since I self-publish, I'm entirely responsible for things like punctuation and spelling, not to mention any errors of fact.
