Featured Interview With Author Suzanne Stephenson
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in the London area and brought up in London and South Eastern England. Interest in the law must be in my blood since my mother's first cousin now deceased was Sir Stephen Tumim HM Inspector of Prisons. I started studying the law at the aged of 18 in London.
Eventually becoming a District Judge and married to a lawyer our lives were very much in Southern England near London. However we craved a change of scene. We already had cats in the house and hens in the garden.
That change came in 2010 when we made a big lifestyle choice and moved to an old farmhouse in North Lincolnshire England. My husband runs a holiday cottage and takes a few summer campers on the land. I retired from the law in early 2021.
We have 7 cats at the farm and 1 dog . We keep chickens and a handful of pigs. Our friends keep horses on our land and there are some geese.
Our animals are important to us. The cats have all been rescued in some way. The dog also came from a rescue centre.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was an avid reader as soon as I could read and read books such as Anne of Green Gables and Treasure Island from 7/8 years old. When I was 12 I tried writing a book and the publisher who turned me down politely suggested I tried writing about something I knew since I had attempted a spy adventure!
I did not try writing a full length fiction book again until after I retired in 2021 although I did contribute to a legal text book at one point.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
For many years I enjoyed the historical adventures of Patrick O'Brien and Bernard Cornwall. These days I enjoy historical fiction crossed with detective mystery as can be found in Bernard Knight's Crowner John books and Stephen Done's Inspector Vignoles books.
However none of these inspire my writings; I think the influences on my writings go back to John Mortimer, Beatrix Potter, and the illustrated books of the 19th and early 20th C I collect in junk shops!
Tell us a little about your latest book?
" A Cat's Judgement" is the second time I have written about the mysterious black cat Mr Perkins who previously appeared in " Mr Perkins takes Charge". However it can be read as a free standing book. It is a book for anyone who likes cats or is curious about the English legal world. I hope readers will get the humour in it…cats can be very crafty, accidentally or on purpose. Whenever Mr Perkins is around things can change!
