Featured Interview With Author Terence Ang
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am the same age as my country, born in 1965. Born and bred in Singapore, this island has been the only home I know. I used to have a pet husky, but not any more when my life got busier and more hectic. I have always been a PR/marketing person, and the various jobs in my career all involved those elements. Life as I knew it came to a crashing end in August 2020 when I had a stroke and have been on the journey of recovery since.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I am not typically academic, and reading was never a passion of mine. However, one of my earliest jobs was with a magazine, in which I handled fashion-related articles. Thanks to working in the publishing industry, I became well-acquainted with many in the journalist profession. As I was recovering from my stroke, many of these friends were among those who encouraged me to pen down my feelings and experiences.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Although reading is not a favorite pastime, I do enjoy reading true stories in the form of autobiographies or real-life accounts of human exploits. One such book I read recently was Viola Davis' Finding Me, which I liked a lot because it was about relationships in her life and the different types of people who crossed her path. I was also inspired by Charlie Mackesy's The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, which was given to me when I was beginning to write my first book. What I initially though I could not achieve, reading that book motivated me to overcome my perceived limits that led to the publication of A Cry in the Dark.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Emerging From the Dark, is a follow-up to my first book. It is a collection of stories told by different stroke survivors who overcame the odds in their own way. Interspersed with these stories are my own hand-drawn illustrations that are accompanied by my thoughts and feelings regarding my condition after stroke. Together, these stories and illustrations will motivate any reader going through difficulties in life, and because of their timeless nature, the reader can come back to them whenever there is a need for uplifting one's mood.
