Featured Interview With Author Simon Whitmore
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am an electrician by day, a writer by night, and a stormtrooper every other weekend (movie accurate TK from The Empire Strikes Back, with the 501st UK Garrison), with a love for storytelling. Because I hail from Leicester, UK, all my novels feature either a quick mention or sometimes a walk-on part from Joseph Carey Merrick, aka The Elephant Man. Taking a cue from him – he was instrumental in taking himself off to the freak shows in 1883 (a full 5 years before Jack the Ripper) when all else failed! – I've been writing seriously now for 17 years, with five self-published novels and more in the works.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I began writing avidly in school when I would reel off reams and reams of fantastical stories often with a horror, fantasy, or sci-fi connection. I love the idea of presenting flawed individuals in strange circumstances (often the underdog) who can get one over on the baddie! I do like happy endings as I like to think the reader appreciates this, but not always – sometimes they are left open – for another book? Maybe.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Some of my favourite books include Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, I am Legend by Richard Matheson, most of Cormac McCarthy's novels, same for Rad Bradbury, anything about Jack the Ripper, and Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. My latest WIP (currently at 60,500 words and soon to be first draft) was inspired by a friend of mine who passed away rather tragically – it's a way for me to give her new life.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
When an ancient feud between the Mitclani and the Urbat—ancient vampires and age-old werewolves—finally spills out onto the streets of the world, many are caught in the crossfire; the victims either turned, brutally murdered or taken as food. Those left find themselves scavenging by day and fighting off Mitclani raiders at night. Alone and desperate, five occupants barricade themselves in a house in one of London's elite neighbourhoods. They all have separate agendas but one common goal. Staying alive during the day is relatively easy, if you’ve got the right weapons, but keeping death from the door at night is another thing altogether. And, as if keeping blood-hungry vampires out wasn’t enough, to top it off the full moon is only days away, meaning the square could soon be rife with menacing wolves. It is survival of the fittest, where any moment an attack from otherworldly beings with large teeth and sharp claws is a possibility.
