Featured Interview With Author Rick Tabor
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised as an "Air Force brat" with my Dad in the US Air Force, meaning that we moved about every 3 years or so, finally settling down in Bryan, Texas. On the plus side, I lived in Texas, Illinois, California, England and Oklahoma all before the dawn of my freshman year at Bryan High School. There, I won the Science Fair and got to attend the International Science Fair where I met (briefly) Glenn Seaborg, the Nobel Prize winner. I then worked and studied my way through Texas A&M University where I received a degree in Chemistry. After a full (and fun) career developing polymer-products, I retired and now blend my scientific expertise with a vivid imagination to craft action/horror/fantasy thrillers.
I have a schnoodle who is our resident barking door bell.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I released my creative side when I devoured the entire Tom Swift YA book series during the summer of my 3rd grade in elementary school. I began writing just prior to that, writing, starring in and directing the 2-person 3rd grade school skit "The Injured Lawyer Gets Revenge". This was followed by telling scary stories around campfires and stories for my children. After I retired, I had time to channel my creativity into an actual novel.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite authors include Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Ray Bradbury, Harper Lee, Michael Crichton and Orson Scott Card. My favorite genre is Science Fiction and most recently Urban Fantasy.
Dean Koontz and Stephen King have been my biggest inspirations for my writing.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My debut novel, Children of the Scroll, was inspired by my 12-year-old daughter at dusk one night as we were driving home from soccer practice. She saw a woman in a hooded cloak in near a drainage culvert and asked "What is she doing?" In a spooky voice, I told her that was the "Mud Woman" who was waiting for children who were out too late after dark to absorb into her cloak.
This was a little too close to Stephen King's IT novel, so I morphed it into a plot about someone made from clay. Eight months later, the result was a first draft of Children of the Scroll.
Children of the Scroll –
An ancient magic is found in the modern world. No one is ready for it.
After his mother dies during a pandemic, Brian Newman stumbles upon an ancient Scroll that creates life from clay. Seeking to bring his mother back to life, he enlists the help of a disgraced rabbi to obtain an unusual list of ingredients for use in a ritual that changes everything. Chased by mercenaries, a foreign weapons company, the police, a purveyor of ancient artifacts and an unscrupulous Russian private investigator, Brian and his family must hide, survive and fight forces of both man and darkness to keep the Scroll out of the hands of those who want to misuse its powers.
