Featured Interview With Paityn Parque
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Hi, I'm Paityn Parque and I'm 15-years-old. I live in Puyallup, Washington with my parents, older sister, and an idiotic charcoal lab. Madness is my first novel ever to be published. I play competitive volleyball year-round, and when I'm not playing I love to game and write!
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I've been an avid reader ever since I could learn to read. But I'm also a picky reader as well. After clearing out my local library full of genres I wanted to read, I moved onto Amazon and other websites. It's hard for me to get out of comfort zone to read, as I love those post-apocalyptical gory novels.
I can also vividly remember how I got into writing. I always had a soft spot for short stories, and have been creating them ever since I was little, but the very first time I had an idea sprout into a 500-paged novel was on a plane. For 13 hours. So I had a lot of free time on my 11-year-old hands.
That novel gave me a new reality of becoming an author. And ever since then, I've been viciously writing my brains out. There were two other novels before Madness that I never got to published, but still want to rewrite them one day.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have a lot of authors that I read from, so to a name a couple would be doing the others no justice. I love to read dystopian, fantasy, post-apocalyptic (my favorite!), and anything that has zombies.
My grandfather was an author that published traditionally. He often published war books, dating back to the time when he served in the Vietnam War. My favorite, and only book of his that I still have, is called Sweet Vietnam. It's about how he met my Vietnamese grandmother during the war, and how he was able to get her back to the states. He is my inspiration to write. If only he could see me now. I wish you were here to teach me a thing or two; you left too early.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Madness, is a dark fantasy/ science fiction fantasy novel. I would say it's like the Hunger Games, but much more twisted and dark. It took me about two months to write and complete the first draft, and a year to get that baby published after edits and all that 'fun' stuff.
Madness is about a girl named Ezra Adkins who is brutally murdered in her own home one night. But she wakes up in a game called the Battles. It's a ruthless cycle of kill or be killed, but players have unlimited lives. The only two known ways out is buying your way out (but the amount is impossible to reach) and suicide. Suicide keeps players dead for good. Ezra must survive in the game with her teammates and figure out a way to get out before the she becomes the real enemy.
There's a lot of phycological themes integrated in the story, as you encounter players that have gone crazy, ones with twisted morals, and others barely hanging in there. It also delves into Ezra's morals, as she starts to question everything around her and the person she was becoming. Although this book seems dark and depressing, there's a lot of light-hearted moments and events as well. An enticing character, Zag, is a young boy who keeps his spirit up no matter what. Even during fights, he cracks jokes. He's a bit immature, but his goofiness keeps everyone on their toes. He was definitely my favorite character to write so far.
