Featured Interview With Author P. C. James
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
P.C. James was born and raised in northern England where most of his books are set. He's the author of the quietly humorous Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries, the One Man and His Dog Cozy Mysteries, and co-author of the Royal Duchess and Sassy Senior Sleuths cozy mysteries.
Today, retired from life in the corporate world, he lives near Toronto in Canada with his wife. They have two grown children and a grandson.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was an avid reader from the day I learned to read and read everything that was available. However, I didn't start writing until the 1980s when I began with short articles for the local newspaper and other publications — not for pay at that point. I began writing books in the 1990s but couldn't find anyone interested in publishing them until I learned about self-publishing around 2015/16. After some false starts, I began publishing on Amazon in 2018 with a YA Sci-fi series that very few people bought. My next venture, however, The Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries series, does sell well and so does my new cozy mystery series featuring a character from the Miss Riddell books — Inspector (now ex-inspector) Tom Ramsay.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Recently, I've been reading a lot more non-fiction but my favorite authors remain pretty constant: Jane Austen, Bill Bryson, and Douglas Adams. In the cozy mystery field, I like Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, and now Steve Higgs.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, Royally Snuffed, is one that's co-authored with Kathryn Mykel who writes 'Crafts and Hobbies Cozy Mysteries' concerning quilting. Royally Snuffed is set in 1959 England and features a Duchess Detective with her three assistants, Winnie, Margie, and Dotty, as well as a helpful corgi dog named Barkley. Royally Snuffed has been in the works for almost a year now so it will be a relief to see it finally published.
Another book that's been a long time in the making is the next Tom Ramsay book, A Missing Manuscript and Murder, and it will come out in December.
