Featured Interview With Author KJ Fieler
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was raised in sunny Florida, where I developed a love for books, kayaking, and perusing cemeteries. I spend part of the year in New Hampshire, surrounded by forests, old stone walls, and enough seasonal drama to keep my imagination well-fed.
Whenever possible, I travel with my husband across the U.S. in our vintage Airstream, exploring national parks and collecting stories from the road. I share my life with a highly suspicious cat who side-eyes every piece of modern technology. She’s firmly convinced the toaster is out to get her.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I’ve always written to entertain myself, but I began sharing my stories with others around junior high. By high school, I’d won several writing awards and was being encouraged to pursue it as a career. I’m drawn to stories that explore identity, loyalty, and survival—how these forces shape who we are and push us to confront our deepest truths. I’m especially fascinated by the gray space between right and wrong, and how people navigate moral ambiguity when their lives—or the lives of others—are on the line. I often ground my fiction in contemporary issues, particularly women’s rights and societal pressures, weaving them into narratives that reflect the complexities of the world we live in.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Margaret Atwood for her precision, Neil Gaiman for his sense of wonder and darkness, and Shirley Jackson for her ability to unsettle with the quietest of details. They taught me that language can be both beautiful and brutal at once.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Shadow Hunter (book two) is complete and currently in the editing phase. Ada, Dieb, and Aldrik are back, with Ada and Dieb navigating the complexities of their relationship, while Ada finds herself drawn to Aldrik, struggling to resist his undeniable charms. I’m also deep into the final novel in the trilogy. End of Shadows (book 3), set at the beginning of the women’s movement, is an even more intricate and perilous tale exploring power, forgiveness, and the true cost of personal freedom.
