Featured Interview With Author Kathy Haynes
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I'm a lifelong resident of Portland, Oregon. I studied technical writing and worked as a project manager, communications consultant, and editor. The Missing Years is my debut novel. Now retired, I spend my time hiking, gardening, writing, and creating mixed media art. I have three granddogs but no pets of my own.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My fascination with books began in fifth grade, at age 10, when the teacher assigned "Charlotte's Web." As part of my book report, I created a drawing that looked just like the cover of the book with Fern, Wilbur, and Charlotte. Come to think of it, that might have been the beginning of my art journey too. I began writing poetry and short stories in college, but it wasn't until I retired that I devoted my time to writing a novel.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have many favorite authors: Barbara Kingsolver is at the top of the list. She hooked me with "The Poisonwood Bible." I also love Jodi Picoult, Alice Hoffman, Matt Haig, Taylor Jenkins Reid, Kristin Hannah, Ann Patchett, Carl Hiaasen, and more. I read every book in Sue Grafton's alphabet series. How sad for her to pass before getting to the letter Z. It's a long list of favorites and a variety of genres.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
I set out to write a book about the cremains found underground at the Oregon State Hospital, a sad and ghoulish truth. But as the book progressed, I began learning about fatherless daughters, how they might end up in unhealthy relationships, and how difficult it is for them to let go. And so the theme changed to fatherless daughters. This story about the search for the truth is filled with drama and suspense. The ending will surprise you.
