Featured Interview With Author Karin Adams
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Canada. I still live there today with my family and near lots of great friends. We’re famous for our flat, prairie landscapes and extremely cold weather, but I always say that the long winters are ideally suited to writing! Currently, I divide my time between writing fiction and working on my creative writing workshops. I’m developing an online video course based on my new book The One Week Writing Workshop in order to help encourage and guide aspiring writers through the novel-writing process. Beyond that, I try to get outside whenever I can for a walk (yes, even in winter!). I don’t have any pets, but I love animals and am good buddies with all the dogs in my neighborhood.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
Storytime with my mom before bed is one of my earliest and fondest memories. I also remember getting giddy with excitement when Mom took me to our small local library branch for a reading hour, and occasionally to the large library downtown. At the time the scale of “the big library” blew my mind—all those books! It was when I graduated from following along with picture books to chapter books that my fascination with stories solidified once and for all. I knew then and there that I wanted to write books without pictures—or rather, books that made you imagine the pictures yourself. I still have a copy of my very first novel written when I was about seven years old. It’s a whopping one and a half pages in length and unfinished. While I abandoned that manuscript, I’ve been writing ever since!
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I enjoy the work of so many authors and read lots of different genres. I often have several books on the go and try to balance reading classic literature (I will never catch up!) and exploring new authors’ work (I won’t catch up there, either!). I’m also one of those “re-readers”, and I often go back to the books that first inspired me to write fiction. Some of my childhood favorites include the The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, and middle grade fiction from Judy Blume and Gordon Korman. I re-read for the chance to dwell again in the story worlds I loved. But I also find that re-reading helps to make me a better fiction writer. I notice layers I may not have consciously seen the first time around, and I can better appreciate and learn from the artistry of the writing itself.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is The One Week Writing Workshop: 7 Days to Spark, Boost or Revive Your Novel. It’s a writer’s handbook based on my own writing process and the in-person creative writing workshops I’ve been delivering since 2010. It’s for new writers who are looking for guidance as they write their first novel, and for seasoned writers in need of inspiration or some fresh tactics. I love working with and encouraging other writers! Over the years, seeing how sharing my writing activities has helped others to spark ideas and even get “unstuck” inspired me to gather all my strategies into one place—a workshop in a book! My favorite thing about the book is that you “write as you read” in order to learn my novel-writing method. By the end of the book, you’ve been practicing and creating while learning, and you’ve gained the confidence that you too can write a book (because of course you can!).
