Featured Interview With Author Joseph Allen Wood
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I'm a militarty brat from sothern Oregon. I grew up everywhere. I kinda got left in Washington DC when I was 18, and had to figure things out. Ended up liking the vibe, so I stayed a while. I'm looking at living abroad next year, however. American beaches are too expensive, and I need sand and salt in my future.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I read the Hobbit when I was six, and the Lord of the Rings when I was seven, so I have a strong foundation in fantasy. I have written my whole life, but I began to take it seriously when I turned 45, after a back injury ended a boring construction career. I'm actually grateful that it happened! If I hadn't hurt myself, I might never have followed my heart.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I am and always will be a Dune dude. I have been heavily influenced by the Hyperion series (Dan Simmons) and the Bobby Dollar trilogy by Tad Williams. But my characters come from people I have met, some that I know intimatley.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
I started wrirting the Shixa based on the idea, "what if a Succubus had dissociative disorder?" My friend Zac said the idea was awesome, but suggested I recreate the angels and demons as they were actually written in the Old Testament. So I dug out the good ol' Book of Ezekiel and read it, and boy oh boy was I blown away by what people believe. I decided then to keep the tale based in truth, doing my best to keep things accurate to the Old Testament and Tanakh. The tale of redemtion is spun from that wellspring.
