Featured Interview With Author Jorge Arenas
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Though I was born in Rio Piedras Puerto Rico, I've lived all over the United States due to my parents being in the service. So I wasn't raised in one place, instead, I got to enjoy a diverse series of places that helped to shape the person I am. Currently, I live in Southern New Mexico with my family near Stahmanns Pecan Orchard. It's a lovely area where my family and our collection of mini-Dobermans and cats can enjoy themselves.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
When I was ten, I began to spend time in my school's library due to an injury that kept me from attending recess. During those weeks I found that astronomy books, SciFi books, and horror books caught my eye. From then on, I expanded the genres that I enjoy and am a rabid reader to this day.
It started with my English class in high school. I took a junior-level literature class and part of the experience was to not only study stories, poetry, and other elements of story-telling, but to also create your own. In Ms. Show's class, this became an important creative outlet. Since then, have written stories over the years. It was only in the last few years that I decided to publish my work.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
The works of H.P. Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, Robert A. Heinlein, and Philip K. Dick are the authors whose work I always find myself reading over and over again. How they build incredible worlds and what it means for those societies I've always found intriguing.
As for genres, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy are my normal choice with the occasional biography.
Funny enough, the vast majority of my work has been inspired by my own dreams. Over the years I've written into a dream journal and from there my dreams have inspired entire stories or even elements of the stories I have written.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book, The Dream Cycle, is a collection of short stories that are directly inspired by my own dreams. As one reads the book you'd imagine that nightmares tend to be the norm for me, which is correct. Because I have many more nightmares than normal dreams, I've utilized dream journalling as a means to cope with this imbalance. It was when I turned 30, that I realized that these journal entries could be used to write stories. So the marriage of my dreams and my writing hobby came to be.
