Featured Interview With Author John W. Howell
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. I spent my youth with the neighborhood kids doing what kids do. I joined the Boy Scouts and spent the next two years working to become an Eagle scout. I worked so hard that I had to wait six months to reach the age requirement. After high school, I went to Michigan State University and then on to a career. I worked for major corporations at the executive level for forty-plus years and finally retired. I live near Austin, Texas, with my spouse and spoiled rescue French bulldog and Boxer.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I always had a fascination with writing and would create stories to amuse myself and others. I started writing seriously while I was still working. I finished my first novel, and in the editing process, I decided it was the worst thing I had ever read. The printed draft was used as a doorstop for a number of years. I realized that working and writing was a formidable combination, so I waited until retirement in 2012 before seriously starting again. Since then, I have published seven books and have several more in mind.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite author is Kurt Vonnegut. His books have inspired me for years. He could take complicated subjects and treat them as such but also interject a degree of humor. Many of his stories were in the realm of fantasy but with a historical backdrop. I so appreciated his use of reoccurring characters that made appearances in his stories without the necessity of contextual explanations. He had a sense of innovation that made his writing a delight. These days I am reading a number of different genres. In addition to thrillers, my former sole interest, I enjoy speculative fiction and certain levels of fantasy. I have found these books have expanded my desire to reach beyond the thriller genre to more varied stories.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest is a sequel to Eternal Road – The final stop. Sam and James, two angels, are reunited to look for two souls, Ryan and Eddie. Ryan was killed in Afghanistan, trying to avoid a schoolyard with his crippled plane. Eddie Rickenbacker, Ryan's hero, is to guide Ryan to his Eternal Home, and now both are missing.
The higher-ups believe that there has been some interference in Ryan and Eddie's journey by Lucifer, so Sam and James have the task of finding Ryan and Eddie to get them back on the road despite the evil interference. Unfortunately, the machinations designed to prevent Ryan and Eddy from completing their journey take the pair to horrifying testing grounds. The places visited represent the best work of the Devil. They are the trenches of World War I in France, gladiators at the Roman Coliseum, the sinking Titanic in 1912, Hiroshima 45 minutes before the bomb, and the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1943.
This book is for you if you like plenty of action, strong characters, time travel, and a touch of spiritual and historical fiction. So, join Sam and James as they try to find the missing souls while staying one step ahead of the Prince of Darkness, who is determined to destroy all that is good.
