Featured Interview With Joan L Scibienski
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and moved to Arizona in the 80s. I have had a variety of pets, but right now I only have have one dog who is a rare Scottish breed called a Dandie Dinmont Terrier.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I had discovered books early as an escape from a very difficult childhood. As a teen I would spill my pain into my journal by writing poetry. When I went to college I studied journalism and was the feature editor of my college newspaper. However, I quite school before graduating and spent some time drifting from job to job. Eventually, I got degrees in both Nursing and Psychology, but I still had my passion for reading and wished someday to write. I didn't actually start writing again until many years later and have written 8 books since. I guess I'm a slow starter.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love Kurt Vonnegut, Steven King, Heinlein, and many more authors. My favorite genre seems to be fantasy and I wish that I could inspire others the way that Vonnegut inspired me.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
The Ariana Series is what I believe is a channeled work. I became obsessed about writing them. I sat at my computer most days for 12 or 13 hours just writing until all the books spilled out of me. The writing style is quite different from anything I had written before and I really felt as though each of the characters were talking with me and telling me what they were thinking and feeling. They felt real.
I believe that I was meant to write the books so that those people, especially teens and young adults, who were developing skills they did not understand would read them and have a framework for what was happening to them and perhaps how to grow successfully through what could feel very frightening.
It is my way of introducing my readers to the potential of having and using their own psychic abilities in a way that not only helps them but can help others, and to help them understand that these are natural abilities and they have nothing to fear.
