Featured Interview With Author J.D.R. Hawkins
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. My husband and I met at Iowa State University and have been married for nearly 42 years. After the birth of our first son, we decided to leave Iowa and move to Colorado, where we lived for almost 20 years. We also lived in Mississippi, Minnesota and South Dakota, because he was transferred for his job. Now we reside in northern California and have been here about two and a half years. We have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and two grandsons, all of which live in Washington. Our fur babies include two miniature dachshunds and two cats.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always adored books, especially animal stories. Bambi was my first true love. My grandma read it to me when I was a little girl. I started writing when I was about nine years old and composed songs as well as stories. The stories grew to picture books, novellas, and finally novels, advancing in readership levels as my kids got older.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I'm a big fan of historical fiction, which is why most of my books are in that genre. I also love a good romance. Gone with the Wind is one of my favorites. Along with Margaret Mitchell, I also love J.K. Rowling, Geraldine Brooks, and Laura Hillenbrand. Mysteries, especially cozy mysteries, are fun reads for me as well.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Fool's Gold Folly is a novella based on one of the minor characters in the Renegade Series. The series centers around a family from north Alabama and describes what they experience from the onset of the Civil War through Reconstruction. The main character in Fool's Gold Folly is Patrick Mulligan, who is an Irish immigrant. Once he learns that gold has been discovered in Colorado Territory, he decides to take his family from Pennsylvania to the Rocky Mountains, where he encounters several interesting characters, including an old miner named Silas Garvey. Silas has an interesting secret, which he only shares with Patrick. This novella serves as a prequel to the fifth and final book in the Renegade Series. I had a lot of fun writing it because the story is based in Colorado, and it focuses on old mountain mining towns, which I have always found fascinating.
