Featured Interview With Author Hilda M. Valentine
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised on a farm in Ringgold,Virginia. My family grew vegetables and tobacco as cash crops. After graduating college I moved to New York to explore job opportunities. For twenty years I worked in Westchester County, New York for various insurance companies working my way up to a managerial position in the claims department. Once my daughter graduated high school and entered college in Delaware I decided to take a job in Manhattan in the World Trade Center.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always enjoyed reading but did not have any interest in trying to write a book.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Some of my favorite authors are T.D. Jakes, Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer. My favorite genre is christian, inspirational and self help books. I have only written one book and it was inspired through my journaling after my survival on the 100th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center on 9/11. My journaling was a way to work through and process some of the things I experienced on that day and how they impacted my entire life.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
I have only written one book and it was inspired by my survival on 9/11 in the South Tower of the World Trade Center. My book, "The Other Side of Nothing" was written to chronicle my survival that day and the long journey towards physical, spiritual and mental recovery. I have aimed to be transparent in providing a glimpse as to what it can look and feel like when someone experinces a traumatic event. My hope is that this book will start conversations surrounding mental health as a part of overall health while diminishing mental health stigma as that stigma caused a delay in my admitting that I needed help and seeking treatment.
