Featured Interview With Author Douglas Van Wyck
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in East Germany, behind the Iron Curtain, and trained to become an engine-fitter. After the Berlin Wall had fallen, I moved to Berlin to begin my university studies. In 1994/95, I took a break to work as a German teacher in Barry, Wales. I received my Master's in Linguistics in 1999 and moved to Bloomington, IN, in the U.S. in August 2000 to pursue a PhD in "Philosophy of Education".
After a brief and somewhat disappointing stint back in Germany, I ventured in the opposite direction: first, to Pohnpei, in the FSM, where I taught classes in the teacher education program at the College of Micronesia, before I settled in Vietnam in early 2014, where I have been teaching English at private schools.
I'm interested in philosophy, history, politics, and photography.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have always loved writing: When everyone moaned that we had an essay to complete in 9th grade, I would start the same day. I wrote both, my Master's thesis and my dissertation in a 'journalistic', irreverent fashion but didn't start writing fiction until 2019: I had a motorcycle accident, which forced me to stay in bed for ten days, during which time I conceived the first chapters of my extensive series of erotic novellas, "The Center of the Universe".
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I used to read a lot of fiction, on top of all the books I read during my graduate program. I love reading Jean Jacques Rousseau, Raymond Chandler and Joseph Heller, Charles Bukowski, Saul Bellow, as well as Philip Roth.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
The book I'm working on is an alternative version of my encounter with a ravishing college student, here in Vietnam. She already features in the long series of erotic novellas, but I want to experiment with a different setting. I'm also slowly trying to finish the long sequel of novellas, of which 200 episodes have already been written and published; in both, English and German. I think I will leave it at 222 chapters, for which I now have to pick up loose ends (and escalate things one more, final time).
