Featured Interview With Author Diane Bator
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I'm a Canadian author who has lived in both Alberta, where I was born and raised, and Ontario, where I lived for 18 years before coming back to the mountains. I currently live outside of Calgary. I'm the mom of three grown kids – with three "adoptees" they are partners with – and two cats.
One of my favorite adventures was leaving Ontario to drive across the country with everything I owned AND two cats. That made for some stories!
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I've always loved books and storytelling. In fact, I think from grades 4-6 I read nearly everything in our school library! I also loved haunting the town library and the used bookstore. I prefer the smell of paper books to a tablet any day!
I've written for as long as I can remember and got serious about the craft when I moved to Ontario. I lived in Orangeville, an hour West of Toronto, and joined a writing group. Something I'd recommend for newbie authors. Having the support of other writers was a great boost to my confidence and I took the leap to becoming a published author.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I have so many favorites! Not all are well known, but I've been able to meet them and get to know them at conferences and so on. I've been fortunate to meet Maureen Jennings (Murdock Mysteries) and love her newest series Paradise Cafe Mysteries.
While I love to read mysteries, I'm also open to other genres.
The people who inspire me most are the people I've met who haven't given up and are thrilled to give back to the writing community. Judy Penz Sheluk is one of those, as is M.J. Moores, and Karen Grose.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Written in Stone is the first book in my new A.J. Cadell mystery series. My first foray into self-publishing after leaving my publisher of 10 years.
Written in Stone was inspired by working in an old theatre/town hall building in Orangeville. I swore I could hear Ella Fitzgerald singing, "Dream a Little Dream of Me." That set off a whole story in my head of ghosts and family mysteries. So, what's it about?
“What happens at Grandma’s house, stays at Grandma’s house.”
The problem is A. J. (Alison Jane) Cadell can’t remember Grandma or her house.
Dreaming of becoming a best-selling romance novelist, Alison is invited to Cedar Grove, British Columbia to be a Writer-in-Residence and reside at Thistlewood Manor for a month. When a resident of the manor is found dead, Alison is drawn into a mystery involving a grandmother she doesn’t remember, a father she thought was long dead, and a handsome firefighter who could be the link to solving the mystery.
Will someone be after her next?
