Featured Interview With Author Dennis Pierce
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I grew up in Townsend, Massachusetts, and now live in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, with my wife and two daughters. We also have a dog named Bruin, a little guy who's a Shih Tzu-Bichon Frise mix.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I've always loved reading from a very early age. As a child, I used to ride my bike to our public library and check out nine or ten books at a time. Mysteries have always captivated me, and by the time I was in middle school, I had read all of the Hardy Boys mysteries. I liked to write stories for as long as I can remember as well. When I was in the sixth grade, I won a short story competition and got to read my story in front of the entire school.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
My favorite genre is mysteries, and that's what I write as well. I'm a huge fan of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels, and I also enjoy reading Lee Child, Michael Connelly, Walter Mosley, and Dennis Lehane.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
In Swinging for Power, a small-time private detective tries to uncover a big-time case of government corruption. Parker Hanson is a former investigative reporter who just had major heart surgery and doesn't even own a gun. He finds himself involved in a case that's much larger and more complex than anything he's taken on before, and he has to battle not only powerful and well-connected adversaries but also his own self-doubts as someone who grew up in a working-class family. I'm especially drawn to underdog characters that readers can relate to. The book took me several years to write, as I had to work on it around my full-time job as a freelance writer and journalist.
