Featured Interview With Author David Caiati
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born in New York, just north of the city, and I moved to Massachusetts at the age of 2. I've lived most of my life in MA (north of Boston), but have spent a few years in other parts of the country: Brooklyn, Manhattan, Atlanta, Los Angeles. Now, I live in an old house in a small city on the coast of MA with my wife and 5 cats. My city shows up in my books.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
My grandmother was the book mender of her local library. Books were my toys (along with legos and matchbox cars). I would spend hours just poring over the books that she couldn't put back on the shelves that found a second life in her home. I have always loved books – not just the stories, but the product – the feel, the scent, the ancient bindings. As soon as I learned how to write, I wrote stories. I didn't publish until after I took an MFA a few years ago. I spent a lot of years writing software. I spent a lot of years wanting to write fiction. I wrote plays in college – one was performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Some of my favorites are Kurt Vonnegut, Dom DeLillo, Toni Morrison, Margaret Atwood, Max Barry, Isaac Asimov. I will start any book – I live close to my local library, and I'm there several times a week. I might not finish or speed read every book I take home, but I usually find something interesting to at least start. My favorite genre is science fiction, but I also enjoy magic realism and anything light and contemporary. Vonnegut is my biggest inspiration – short chapters, plot driven, humorous. I belong to several writing groups in my area and I get lots of inspiration from them.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My latest book is called "Accelerate the Metaverse." It's the story of a software developer who is tasked with creating a metaverse, similar to Second Life. He takes the opportunity to create a digital paradise, complete with advanced artificial intelligence characters. Unfortunately, things go wrong and it seems one of his inventions might actually be a serial killer. It took me almost a year to get this one out, longer than I would have liked, but you know how life is. This book followed my trilogy, "Proteus Unbound," about AIs and humans in Earth's near future.
