Featured Interview With Author Colleen MacFarlane
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. I spent my career in Minneapolis and only recently relocated to Durham, North Carolina. I obtained a M.A. in Counseling Psychology in 1982 and most of my career was in providing therapy to people in all age categories. In 2003, I obtained an MBA in Personal Financial Planning because I love the topic of financial education and investing. The last ten years of my career, I provided financial personalized education to adults who were either facing a financial crisis or were interested in planning for their retirement.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have read many non-fiction books, but I've also been thrilled to read historical fiction. I've loved English as my favorite subject, beginning in grade school. I began writing after my retirement and after many years of research into my family genealogy. My first book, Listening to Her Own Voice is a tribute to my 2nd great aunt who emigrated with her family in 1866 from Switzerland. I'm currently preparing to re-publish this book under the name of LISTEN TO YOUR HEART. The writing has changed, I've changed the cover, and I've added fifty pictures to enhance the true-ness of the story, even though it is in the genre of historical fiction.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I'm inspired by different styles of writing, and the most recent story or novel that I've read. I work every month at meeting new authors, understanding their journey, profiling them on my website because I believe this gets me out of being isolated and I read how another author approaches their writing and their view of the world. It's what I love most about writing – I meet others with the same passion. I read local authors in NC, authors that I've featured on my website, authors that I write a review for, and authors that I have met on social media websites.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
My book, FATAL FUNDS, has just been published. FATAL FUNDS was supposed to be my first book, but for some reason I chose my first novel to be on genealogy. You could say FATAL FUNDS has been waiting to be written for twenty five years. It's a compilation of my education, experience, research and is the combination of two financial planners that I knew. It is about a rogue financial planner who, in desperation, falls to running a Ponzi scheme. About three women who are clients and join together to form their own mini-investment club. Set in 2024, in Minneapolis, and over a few months, the women begin to regret the trust they've placed in their planner. It is a story about how quickly one's financial life can go awry in a short amount of time. Pay attention, or pay dearly. FATAL FUNDS is filled with twists and turns, critical real-life headlines, resources, how to avoid being scammed by spotting the red flags, and all wrapped in an emotional and heartwarming story that will help the reader understand why people cheat and how they get away with it.
