Featured Interview With Author Carmen Kolcsar
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I've been born and raised in Focșani, a small town in Romania, which I left when I was 18 and pursued university studies. Twenty-five years and multiple homes in various parts of the world later, I live now in a small city on the outskirts of Bucharest with my husband and our two 8-years old German Shepards.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was surrounded by (physics!) books since I was born, as my mom was studying for exams. I started reading when I was close to four years old and writing half a year later or so. So, my fascination with books didn't start in my teenage years or even in my early childhood—it was woven into the very fabric of my being from the time I could barely string a sentence together. And now, as I navigate the world as an adult, I continue to be enchanted by the written word, forever seeking new stories to captivate my mind and soul.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I am an avid reader and I don't have a favorite genre. Some of the authors I love and am consciously aware they've influenced me are Brene Brown, Susan Cain, Michio Kaku, Max Tegmark, Nicholas Nassim Taleb, Malcolm Gladwell, Susanna Clarke, Alix E. Harrow, Celeste Ng, Brandon Sanderson, Arthur C. Clarke, Emile Zola. I apologize to all the others for not mentioning their names.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
I started this amazing writing journey by publishing several workbooks for adult development addressing creativity, resilience and active learning, in English and Romanian.
In March 2023, "Storytelling Fuel. From Quarry to Jewel" – my first book, has been released.
In May 2023, I started publishing a short reads series – "The Zen of Office Politics: How to Stay Calm, Confident, and Sane in a Jungle of Drama, Competition, and Emojis", currently including three books: "Office Politics is PERCEPTION of Office Politics", "Understanding How Personalities and Power Dynamics Shape Office Politics", "Virtual Office Politics and Cultural Differences". The series will have seven short books. Later, I might transform it into a full-flavored single business book.
"The Zen of Office Politics: How to Stay Calm, Confident, and Sane in a Jungle of Drama, Competition, and Emojis" is my latest book and it is inspired by real events I've witnessed, participated or triggered during my twenty years long career twenty years in multinational technology companies, leading large global teams, transformation programs, and setting up business units.
Because just the term "office politics" is enough to make most of us want to run for the hills, I took this topic through the Caudine forks of humor, self-deprecation and light irony. The truth is that the reality of office politics slaps us in the face, as it’s an inescapable part of any workplace, whether we’re in a traditional office or working remotely, so we'd better know how to deal with it.
