Featured Interview With Author Brigid Barry
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I'm a recovering Navy brat and have spent most of my life in the beautiful State of Maine. I'm a disabled Air Force veteran and blessed parent of twins. I currently live on a small hobby farm in Southern Maine with my favorite husband and way too many animals. When I'm not writing or keeping my Maine Coon cat Clover out of trouble, I'm spending time with my pinto Dressage mare, Fluffy.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I have been reading for as long as I can remember. In Kindergarten I would borrow Beatrix Potter books from the school library and in elementary school my teachers would bring books from home for me to read. I started writing in Junior High and never stopped.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
I love Michael Crichton, especially Timeline and Dinosaur Teeth. I really learned a lot about pacing and tension through his work. Stephen King's Bag of Bones was a huge inspiration for my debut, Straw Girl. I also enjoy Dan Brown's Robert Langdon series and there's a special place in my heart for historical romance set in Scotland and during the medieval period.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Straw Girl was inspired when I was searching through my computer for something and ran across a word file I'd created a long time ago. Not long after I got out of the Air Force a friend asked me to stay overnight in a haunted house while the owner was away. I also had evidence from the paranormal investigations at a house where I lived with my ex husband when my kids were babies. I transcribed the EVPs and built the story around my experiences. The story itself didn't take long to write, but it took a long time to get published. At one point I was discouraged enough to give up on it. Then a friend needed something to read while she was working her overnight shift, and I gave her Straw Girl. She couldn't put it down and read the whole thing in one night. When she got home it was still dark and she was afraid to get out of her car! That inspired me to keep working on it.
The main character, Mel, is much braver than I was, which I think makes her way more interesting. My two favorite characters are the dog, Rexy, and Mel's niece, Olivia, who both tip Mel off that something beyond the ordinary is happening in her house.
