Featured Interview With Author Bob Freeman
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
Bob followed his own path to become a SciFi author. He went to UCLA for a few quarters, where he spent more time in Yosemite than a freshman college student should. After being asked to leave the University system, his education track led to Humboldt State College (now called Cal-Poly Humboldt). Bob worked throughout college, starting with a Department of Commerce grant studying anerobic bacteria in pulp mill waste and expanded his skills prepping the pathogenic and nursing bacteriology teaching labs. His experience at UCLA enabled Bob to turn a two-year Master’s degree program into a four-year educational jaunt, with side trips to the local mountains.
Forced by extenuating circumstances, he found work in the California desert at the Imperial County Public Health Laboratory, eventually retiring as the Laboratory Director after 18 years. He also took a year to work at the San Francisco City and County Public Health Lab during the height of the first HIV epidemic.
He began writing Science Fiction in 2021 at the tender age of 70 and is working on his fifth volume of the H2LiftShip saga. He has published a few short stories and a ‘TimeWall’ novel is on a path for future release.
Bob Freeman lives in Northern California with his wife and a pair of Australian Shepherds who force him to take walks every day.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
The author is a retired Public Health Microbiologist/Lab Director/LIMS Software designer and a confirmed science geek. The author began writing Indie SciFi in 2021 at the tender age of 70 and has published four volumes in the H2LiftShip series as well as numerous short stories.
All published stories are strongly rooted in science, both real and imagined. No magic is allowed where physics, biology and luck rule the storybook worlds.
All books are written entirely by a human without the assistance of or damage to any AI entity
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Zelazny is the best, I read SciFI in the 70’s but had to work for the last 50 years in hard science fields.
I was inspired to write by the intense boredom of retirement and the need to use the word ‘dogarrhea’ in a book
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Imagine a world exactly like ours but different.
Looking for a Space Opera without all the usual tropes of m-FTL (magical Faster-than-Light) rockets, hot swords, blasters, exploding computers or weird aliens (octopuses excepted)? Fun, food, and space travel in the four-volume epic SciFi series. Over 1100 pages spanning 4 volumes of a completely different space opera.
Follow Graciela as she leaves her family for the Luna Academy and earns her Captain’s bars. Commerce drives the greater heliosphere, with merchants, gamblers, pirates, and workologists all doing their part. Watch out for the angry AI computer tablets and their algal rocket ships.
Did Captain Graciela and Commodore Herb start an all-out HiveWar, crashing the economy and bringing everyone back to bartering, beads, and IOUs? Find out how they start and end a war against algal rockets hosting angry AI tablets.
Explore hot deserts, cool redwoods, the Luna Casino, and the Mort asteroids as Captain Graciela sails around our heliosphere, trading and dealing with friends and passive-aggressive family members.
The series is a family-friendly SciFiTech with real science, pseudo-science, and science that will never work. Perfect for budding space scientists of any age, from youth to geriatrics.
