Featured Interview With Author Alyssa Mitchell
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in St. Louis, MO and I currently live in Indiana. I am married with two children and two dogs.
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was taught to read at around age four and I loved to read then. At the age of six, I read Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, where I learned my first big word, demonstration. I was so proud. I started writing short stories at the age of seven and began writing poetry at nine years old.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
Maya Angelou inspired me to write poetry at a young age and I love reading her books, even today. I enjoy reading Stephen King's books as an adult. Toni Morrison has also been a sort of teacher in storytelling as well. My favorite genres would be autobiographies/biographies and African American literature. I don't think I can pick just one.
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Well, this is my first published work and I am very excited. It took me about a week to write the story and another week to put it all together. I did not draw the illustrations, but used the graphics from one of my subscriptions. I'm starting somewhere, you know.
Blue Bird loves blue. Blue Bird is absolutely sure that blue is the only color worthy of attention. Worms are not even in Blue Bird's diet because they are not blue.
This book, while blue is celebrated, aims to teach young readers colors and to be okay with what they like and dislike.
