Featured Interview With Kadashan (Bertrand Adams)
Tell us a little about yourself. Where were you raised? Where do you live now?
I am a Native American author from Yakutat, Alaska where I live as a retired commercial fisherman and Tribal President. I was raised in Yakutat and grew up most of my time in a fishing community called Dry Bay
At what age did you realize your fascination with books? When did you start writing?
I was very young when my mother began to read to me and my brother. She home school taught us and I was fascinated with the stories about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Fin. I always felt like I wanted to write stories about my life, but never got serious about it when I attended college. There, during a semester, I wrote twelve short stories with a lot of help from my creative writing instructor.
Who are your favorite authors to read? What is your favorite genre to read. Who Inspires you in your writings?
In the earlier day I liked John O'Hara's short stories. I loved stories written by Douglas H. Thayer. I tried to pattern my writing on his simple, yet complete descriptions about his community in Provo Utah. I love fiction and also write non-fiction essays about governments, etc. People inspires me to write about them..
Tell us a little about your latest book?
Under Mount Saint Elias, Gunaaxoo Kwaan is my latest. This is an autobiography about growing up in a small Alaskan village and a quest to find the village of Guseix, where my ancestral roots come from. This is inspiring to me because my elders drove into my brain that when I know who I really am I can succeed in life. As I go through the research and writing I find this to be very true. For that reason I am proud to be Kadashan.
