For too long the city of Manchester seethed in the grip of vicious criminal gangs, they propagated a subculture of barbarism equal to anything catalogued from the Middle Ages. The Greater Manchester Police set their sights on the most vicious of these gangs, led by the Brewster family.
The GMP assembled a task force of gangbusters whose leader DI Stuart Corcoran declared a ‘zero tolerance’ policy on Brewster’s Fairfield Mob.
On a rainy, sticky night in 1999, Corcoran led his team into battle. It transpired to be the last stand for the brutal Brewsters, trapped in the Fairfield Arches; in the shadow of Manchester’s Piccadilly Station, they met their bloody end.
The GMP success at the Arches greatly subdued the other gangs and the citizens of Manchester now felt safe. Corcoran and his colleagues, DS Peter Enright and DC Kevin Jennings were the ‘Heroes of the Arches’.
Eleven years passed and without warning DC Jennings and his pregnant wife were brutally murdered. Detectives found a bone-chilling note at the scene promising more deaths. The note made mention of ‘my entire family’ and the GMP worked on that; they decided the note was from a surviving Brewster. They had been told that the Brewsters were all dead shortly after the battle at the Arches.
A new task force headed by Corcoran’s protégé, DCI Beverley Holland must find the killer before the remaining ‘Heroes’ are killed.
In a dark, unsettling atmosphere of hatred and determination, bodies begin piling up. The killer seems to know everything the police know, impossible as that may seem.
Enright travelled to the birthplace of the Brewsters in Ireland and discovered something devastatingly crucial to the case.
A recurring phenomenon in the stygian gloom was the young man in the black suit who seemed to be haunting the city streets; an evil aura dripped from him like filthy water from a cracked sewer pipe.
Bev Holland and her team work tirelessly to solve the case and every time they score a breakthrough, another victim is murdered. The GMP team is determined not to lose this battle and they are prepared to go to any lengths.
